A federal prison in the Winnipeg area is in lockdown after an inmate was assaulted on Saturday, a prison official said.
The inmate at Stony Mountain Institution was attacked by other prisoners around 8:30 p.m. Saturday and remains in an offsite hospital in stable condition, Correctional Service of Canada spokesman Chris McLauchlan told the Canadian Press on Sunday.
No prison officials were involved in the altercation. Inmates will remain in their cells until an investigation is completed, officials said.
The federal prison, located 25 kilometres north of Winnipeg, can house up to 546 medium-security inmates.
