Kunkel's Olympic dream alive

Mon Jul 7, 1:46 AM

PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - Adam Kunkel's Olympic aspirations are still alive, despite the fact Athletics Canada won't name him to the team at a gala breakfast Monday.

The 400-metre hurdler from Paisley, Ont., was granted an extension after he narrowly missed the Olympic qualifying standard at the Canadian track and field championships on the weekend.

Blustery conditions and nagging injuries conspired against him Sunday in Windsor, Ont.

Kunkel captured his sixth Canadian 400m hurdles title in 50.11 seconds at the University of Windsor, but appealed to Athletics Canada when he missed the required time of 49.50.

He now has until July 22 to run the time, his coach Kevin Tyler told the Canadian Press on Sunday night.

"I would rather have put things out of reach and out of question, but it's not the first time that I've been kind of against the wall," Kunkel said after his race.

Except for a small group of athletes with extenuating circumstances, the window to make the team closed Sunday.

Hurdler Perdita Felicien was granted an extension to help heal an ankle injury, while pole-vaulter Dana Ellis also was granted a medical exemption to sit out the Canadian trials due to an Achilles injury.
