Atlantic finance ministers discuss common trends

Tue Jul 8, 12:09 PM

NOVA.SCOTIA (CBC) - From taxation to energy prices, finance ministers from Atlantic Canada will be discussing a long list of common issues at their meeting in Halifax Tuesday.

Nova Scotia Finance Minister Michael Baker said there is a lot to cover.

"Everything from carbon taxes, to personal income taxes to capital taxes," he said.

The group will also look at the impact of higher oil prices on provincial budgets drawn up prior to the latest energy crisis, ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how an aging population is affecting health care.

There's also a proposal to create a regional pool of capital using one per cent of the savings held by civil servants through the four provincial government pension plans, which could free up billions of dollars to invest in local companies.

"It's looking to see whether or not a strategy of having our pension funds invest in opportunities in Atlantic Canada would make sense for us," said Baker.
