Missing Courtenay, B.C., girl found safe

Wed Jul 9, 1:11 AM

VANCOUVER (CBC) - Police have located a 10-year-old girl from the Courtenay, B.C., area after issuing an Amber Alert on Tuesday.

The girl was found with her stepfather in downtown Victoria Tuesday evening, Comox Valley RCMP said.

The girl's mother was worried about her daughter after the pair didn't return home for dinner on Monday night so she contacted police, RCMP said.

"I haven't slept or eaten. I was shocked, crying, puking," the mother told CBC News after police found her daughter. CBC News is not naming her in order not to identify her daughter.

"I am just really grateful to whoever it was that reported it in to the police," she said.

Police across B.C. were trying to find the girl, who they said had last been seen by her mother in the Cumberland area on Vancouver Island at 3 p.m. Monday.

Police recovered the girl safely within a few hours of issuing the alert.

One man was in police custody in relation to the investigation and charges are pending, Const. Tammy Douglas said in a news release issued late Tuesday.
