SASKATCHEWAN (CBC) - A 26-year-old refugee who was robbed and beaten by four men in downtown Prince Albert while others looked on cannot understand why nobody stepped forward to help him.
"That was the most shocking thing for him, I think," said Aileen Tiffen, who teaches English to Min Min, a refugee from Burman, also known as Myanmar.
"He could not believe that people would stand by and not help."
The young man was attacked as he sat on the banks of the Saskatchewan River Saturday at about 6 p.m. The men stole $120 from his wallet and took off with his bicycle.
People who watched the attack did not help and a cab driver refused to take him to the police station, even though he was bleeding and bruised, Tiffen told CBC News Thursday.
He had to walk to the station on his own, where he later called her for help.
Although nobody came to his rescue during the attack, people have stepped forward since with a new bicycle and donations of money, she said.
Min Min wants to send the money home to help the people of the poor and remote village he left behind when he fled to Thailand at 15.
He has been in Prince Albert since October 2007.
