NEW.BRUNSWICK (CBC) - Members of the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council are working to clean up more than $20,000 worth of damage at a children's camp.

The Rising Sun camp at Little Lake, near Tracy, N.B., was vandalized so badly last weekend that volunteers are still working to clean up the mess.

"When I went in to the facility, I found the interior totally destroyed," said Nelson Palmeter, the member of the council who discovered the damage.

"All the windows have been smashed out, all the plates, cups, saucers, were all thrown on the floor and smashed through windows, the toilets were all smashed, the freezer in the kitchen was all turned over on the floor."

The lodge at the camp is used as part of a free program meant to teach aboriginal children about their culture.

The camp has been used for 25 years and was recently renovated. The damage has been estimated at $20,000.

"We've been renovating, working on it for the last couple of years," Palmeter said. "This really hurt us."

Joseph Glen Thompson helped build the lodge building 25 years ago and said he will now help rebuild the facility.

It was a senseless crime, Thompson said.

"If they ever do catch the people who did that, I would like to see them come back, have to help us clean up maybe, even attend a couple of our meetings to see who we are," Thompson said. "We're no different than anyone else."

The RCMP are investigating the vandalism but don't yet have an suspects. Anyone with information about the destruction on the property is being asked to contact the police.
