Toxic fumes send Syncrude worker to hospital

Mon Jul 21, 12:49 PM

EDMONTON (CBC) - A Syncrude worker was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital on Monday morning after breathing in toxic fumes.

The 37-year-old man was overcome by the fumes at the oilsands company's main plant in Fort McMurray on Sunday night, said Barrie Harrison, a spokesman for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.

The worker was cleaning a vessel that contained hydrocarbons.

"We know that there were toxic fumes of some sort," said Harrison. "We don't even know the type of toxic fumes that may have been involved with that. We know that his injuries are serious."

Occupational Health and Safety is investigating.
