PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed goaltending prospect Jimmy Howard, the club announced on Monday.
Howard, 24, has appeared in eight games over the past two seasons with the NHL club, posting a 2.56 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.
He recorded two shutouts in 54 games with the Red Wings' American Hockey League affiliate in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a 2.83 average.
Howard will earn $600,000 US next season.
The Syracuse, N.Y., native was selected by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2003 NHL entry draft. Earlier that year, he represented the U.S. at the world junior hockey championships.
Starter Chris Osgood will return for the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings, with Ty Conklin signed as a free agent to replace Dominik Hasek, who retired.
The Red Wings also announced on Monday the signing of Swedish defenceman Jonathan Ericsson, who scored a goal in eight games with Detroit last season, spending most of the year in Grand Rapids.
The club selected the defender in the ninth round of the 2002 draft.
