PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - Suspensions have been levied against senior baseball teams in Fredericton and Summerside, P.E.I., after incidents that led to a game being called off.
The Fredericton Royals and the Summerside Chevys were playing a senior baseball league game on P.E.I. on Sunday when both teams began complaining of inside pitches and players loudly exchanged words in the third inning after a player was hit by a ball.
The complaints escalated to a player threatening an umpire, so officials called the game off due to safety concerns.
Andrew McNeil of Fredericton and Justin Grady of Summerside were handed two-game suspensions. Royal Jeremy Turgeron received a three-game suspension.
It is the first time the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League has ever had to call a game because of unsportsman-like behaviour, said Brian Richard, president of the league.
"We will be talking to both coaches," Richard said. "We don't want this type of incident to happen again. We want them to control their players or fines will be escalated."
The teams will be facing off again this weekend in Fredericton.
