The Inuit village of Akulivik, Que., is mourning the death of Tumasi Quitsak, a local singer and songwriter who died Sunday.
The municipal office in Akulivik, a remote village of 500 located in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, closed early Monday afternoon in honour of Quitsak.
Mayor Lucasi Alayco told CBC News that Quitsak became ill on Sunday and was flown by medevac to a hospital in southern Canada, where he later died.
Quitsak's age was not known, nor was the cause of death.
Quitsak began recording songs in the Inuktitut language for the CBC's Northern Service in the 1970s. Among the compilations he recorded for CBC was the 1981 record Better Times.
Quitsak also worked for many years as a community radio announcer in his home community.
Alayco said funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
