PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - Corrosion on the Tyne Valley Bridge in western P.E.I. has led the Department of Transportation to establish a weight restriction.
The restriction on the Route 12 bridge came into effect Tuesday morning. A spokesperson for the department says the bridge is 40 to 50 years old and nearing the end of its lifespan.
The problem was found as part of a new program of bridge inspections introduced late last year. The goal is to inspect every bridge on the Island every two years.
Trucks weighing more than 10,000 kilograms will now have to take an alternate route around Tyne Valley. The department said the bridge is still safe for lighter vehicles.
The restriction will remain in place until a more thorough inspection can be carried out.
