TORONTO (CBC) - The Toronto Blue Jays benefited from some timely hitting and a steady pitching performance from Roy Halladay in their 7-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Thursday afternoon.
The win came directly on the heels of a 5-1 Blue Jays victory completed earlier in the day, a game that had been suspended Wednesday night due to rain in the sixth inning.
Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera (6-6) put the leadoff batter aboard in five of six innings and four of them eventually came around to score. Cabrera allowed all seven Toronto runs on 11 hits over five innings with three strikeouts and two walks as the Orioles (48-53) dropped their 12th game out of 16.
Lyle Overbay and Greg Zaun each went one-for-four with a pair of RBIs in the win, while Adam Lind and Marco Scutaro each went three-for-four with two runs scored.
The timely offence from the Blue Jays' bats was more than enough to make a winner out of ace Roy Halladay (12-7), who allowed just one run on seven hits in seven innings with six strikeouts for the Blue Jays (51-51), who move back to the break-even mark with the win.
Halladay wasn't at his dominating best as the Orioles had a runner on third in three of the first four innings of the game, but none of those runners were able to score. The right-hander allowed just one in the bottom of the sixth, when Luke Scott scored Aubrey Huff from third base with a sacrifice fly.
With the win, Halladay took over the major league lead in innings pitched (159 1-3) and lowered his ERA to 2.82.
Jays build big lead
Toronto had a solid chance to open the game's scoring in the first inning with Matt Stairs at third with one out. The Fredericton, N.B., native attempted to tag up and score on a subsequent fly ball to right from Zaun, but Nick Markakis threw a one-hop strike to catcher Guillermo Quiroz to nail him at home plate and keep the game scoreless.
Toronto got on the board with a pair in the third inning, which was set up after second baseman Joe Inglett was hit by Cabrera to lead off the frame. Inglett then stole second base before advancing to third on a single from Scutaro.
Inglett then scored and Scutaro advanced to second after Cabrera threw a wild pitch to the backstop with Alex Rios at the plate. Overbay scored Scutaro with a line drive single to left to put Toronto up 2-0.
Lind led off the fourth inning with a double off Cabrera and then scored on a single from Brad Wilkerson in the next at-bat to push the lead to 3-0.
Scutaro doubled on a sharp grounder to left to lead of the fifth inning before advancing to third and then scoring on consecutive sacrifice fly outs from Rios and Overbay.
Toronto continued to pour it on with another three runs in the sixth inning, with a leadoff single from Scott Rolen serving as the catalyst. The Jays third baseman advanced to second after a single from Lind and then moved to third after Wilkerson drew a walk to load the bases.
Zaun then snapped a 0-19 slump with a two-run single to right that pushed the score to 6-0, which chased Cabrera from the game in favour of Fernando Cabrera.
The reliever managed to retire Inglett before Scutaro hit a sacrifice fly to right that plated Wilkerson for a 7-0 Blue Jays lead.
Baltimore finally responded with a run in the sixth on Scott's sacrifice. The Orioles finished the game 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The Blue Jays will return home for a six-game homestand against the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays beginning Friday when Miguel Batista (4-11) is slated to take the mound against Toronto's John Parrish (1-0).
