Soldier-brothers killed in crash were 'great Canadians'

MONTREAL (CBC) - The Quebec family of two soldiers killed in a traffic accident this week have spoken out publicly for the first time about the tragedy.

Éric and Jonathan Leduc's parents say the unexpected death of their two sons has been "very trying" and has left the family "deeply saddened."

In a statement released Thursday, Jeannot and Bertha Leduc said their sons were "great Quebecers and great Canadians who had the chance to prove it by proudly serving their country in Afghanistan."

Éric, 25, was a member of the 12e Régiment blindé du Canada. He returned from Afghanistan in the spring following a seven-month tour.

Jonathan, 22, spent nine months as an infantryman in Afghanistan in 2006 with the Royal 22nd Regiment, also known as the Van Doos.

Both brothers were both working for the military at CFB Valcartier and had recently moved in together in a Quebec City borough.

They died in a car crash early Tuesday morning on Highway 40, west of Quebec City. Police said speed was likely a factor.

Their parents say the two were very close and were not just brothers, but friends and confidants who shared many parts of their lives.

"Their smiles and vitality will always remain embedded in our memories," they said.

The brothers will be laid to rest in a private military funeral on Saturday.

The family has requested privacy to mourn.
