Stowaway frog to land in Fredericton science centre

NEW.BRUNSWICK (CBC) - The same day Fredericton's Science East centre found its missing White's tree frog, it received the offer of a new exotic amphibian.

Staff at the museum were contacted by Canada Border Services Agency on Wednesday with the offer of a stowaway frog that came into the Saint John harbour on a container ship, said Karla Gimby, a worker at Science East.

The frog was examined by the Environment Department, which determined it was free of disease and no danger to Canadian animals or insects.

When the department suggested Science East might be interested in the frog, "We jumped at the chance," said Gimby.

The science centre had just found its lost exotic White's tree frog, Buddah, before receiving the call offering the new amphibian.

Buddah went missing from her cage last week but was found sitting on a staff member's bag in the basement on Wednesday.

The museum had contacted the media pleading for the return of Buddah. Officials there haven't been able to determine if she'd been taken from the museum and returned or if she'd just been removed from her unlocked cage and escaped.

Gimby said staff are still researching what kind of frog is being donated to Science East.

The container ship originated in South America and its last port before arriving in Saint John was in the Virgin Islands.
