Blaze destroys public housing unit near Iqaluit

Thu Jul 24, 2:09 PM

Firefighters in Iqaluit have put out a fire that destroyed a public housing unit in nearby Apex early Thursday morning.

Eight residents that were in the house escaped. Fire officials say no one was hurt.

Iqaluit deputy fire chief Chris Wilson told CBC News that by the time crews arrived at house 3050, a quarter of the unit was in flames.

"At that point in time, it was a structure fire and not stable enough to send firefighters into the building," Wilson said Thursday morning. "So ... we took up a defensive posture and then we spent the better part of the morning putting it out."

Wilson said it took firefighters until about 10:30 a.m. ET to extinguish the blaze.
