PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - The committee trying to raise money for a new wellness centre for Canada Games events in Montague, P.E.I., says it's making progress in securing some extra money for the project.
The building was originally projected to cost about $5 million. What's on the table now is a scaled-down version for $6.3 million.
Merrill Scott, chair of the Montague Canada Games Committee, told CBC News Wednesday that it has pending approval of an extra $800,000 under the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, but it hinges on whether Montague council approves the town's $400,000 contribution.
"There is a special meeting: it will either be late next week or the very first part of the following week," said Scott.
"Until that time, we have to call it pending. It is very positive from the community at large at this moment, but we do have to have a vote from town council."
Scott said that if Montague gives its approval for the funding, construction will begin by the middle of next month.
The wellness centre would house a hockey rink, library and two walking tracks, and host women's wrestling events for the Canada Games.
