SASKATCHEWAN (CBC) - A woman from Beechy, Sask., has claimed a $24-million lottery prize, the biggest prize ever for a Saskatchewan resident.

Jean Canning, who lives in the village of 240 people in the southwestern part of the province, won $23,963,940 on the Sept. 18 Super 7 draw, the Western Lottery Corp. announced Monday.

Canning bought the winning ticket from a drug store in Swift Current but didn't find out she was a winner until she had the ticket checked at a convenience store in Lucky Lake on Sept. 26.

She said when the clerk ran the ticket under the scanner and there was a "woo hoo" sound, she thought she had won a free ticket.

Instead, the clerk told her she had matched up the seven winning numbers 5, 8, 10, 13, 22, 36 and 47 and was the sole winner of the big prize.

After that, someone got a chair so Canning could sit down.

The lottery corporation didn't say anything about Canning's family, what she does for a living or how old she is.

It said she planned to put her money in the bank while she decides what to do with it, although some travel could be in her future.

It's been a big summer for lottery winners in Saskatchewan. On Aug. 9, a man from Lethbridge, Alta., who bought a Lotto 6/49 ticket in Outlook, Sask., won $17.2 million.
