Movie store clerk doubles as popular artist

At a north Edmonton movie shop, people don't just stop in to rent flicks.

Swarms of people come to see Movie Studio's assistant manager, Chris Labrenz – an artist gaining a cult following for his drawings inspired by horror movies such as The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and Friday the 13th.

"Pretty much anyone who comes in (the shop) knows him or has heard of him," said Kayla Ausmus, supervisor at Movie Studio, 7632 144 Ave.

Staff say fans are constantly calling for Labrenz even when he's not working to ask about his artwork, which is displayed at the movie shop.

"He definitely has a following," Ausmus said.

Labrenz said he's flattered by the fans, but admits he has a job to do at the video store.

"I'm sure the staff get a little tired of people asking for me," he said. The 33-year-old has been drawing ever since he could hold a pencil.

At 13, he sold his first piece for $1,000 and has since done artwork for Ozzy Osbourne and Kenny and Spenny from the TV show Kenny vs. Spenny.

In the Toronto-filmed show, a popular drawing of a unicorn puking a rainbow - drawn by Labrenz - hangs on the wall in Kenny's room.

"There's not a day that goes by when I'm not drawing," said Labrenz.

He likes to take childhood favourites, such as Ren and Stimpy and Mario Bros., and put them to paper in his own way.

"I try to make something more scary than (Friday the 13th character) Jason and more zany than Ren and Stimpy."

His love for drawing has translated into a day job as a tattoo apprentice at an east Edmonton shop, Capital Tattoo.

"(Being asked to tattoo someone) is one of the highest forms of flattery. It is pretty rad."
