DETROIT (Reuters) - The Detroit Red Wings earned a convincing 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday in the opening game of the Western Conference finals.
Brian Rafalski and Johan Franzen put the Red Wings 2-0 up in the first period with powerplay goals then Swede Tomas Holmstrom added a third with a powerplay tip-in in the second.
Finn Valtteri Filppula made it 4-0 before Brenden Morrow scored late in the second for the fifth-seeded Stars, who were unable to stop Detroit picking up their seventh successive win in the post-season.
Game two of the best of seven series will played on Saturday in Detroit.
