Bomb kills at least seven in northwestern Pakistan

Sun May 18, 12:01 PM

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A bomb blast at a bakery shop in the northwestern Pakistani town of Mardan on Sunday killed at least seven people and wounded 16, police said.

The shop was in the military cantonment area of the town, which has suffered several attacks by Islamist militants.

"The blast took place in a bakery shop in the cantonment area of Mardan," police officer Hamidullah Khan told Reuters.

Police said the blast was caused by a bomb, but they were still establishing whether it could have been a suicide attack.

The security situation in Pakistan has deteriorated markedly since mid-2007, mainly in the northwest, with militants linked to the Taliban and al Qaeda carrying out suicide bombings.

More than 600 people have been killed in militant related violence since the beginning of this year.

The violence had tapered off in recent months, particularly after a new government, sworn in at the end of March, opened peace talks with tribes in the semi-autonomous tribal areas where militants have been most active.
