Sask. NDP focus on fall election strategy

Dwain Lingenfelter, leader of the Saskatchewan NDP, will be formulating party policy during a weekend convention in Regina.

While federal politicians are now in campaign mode for a national vote, members of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party are planning strategy for the provincial election, which is set for Nov. 7.

The NDP were meeting Saturday in Regina for a provincial policy convention.

Among the topics up for discussion was a proposal to create a government run pharmaceutical company.

The concept has already been panned by the NDP's political rivals, the governing Saskatchewan Party, but NDP leader Dwain Lingenfelter says he's not deterred.

"Not that long ago in this province they called Tommy Douglas crazy for suggesting medicare," Lingenfelter said. "So, leadership is about putting out ideas. Selling them, getting people involved, discussion and we'll do that this weekend. I think we're going to come up with a heck of a platform."

Party members will also discuss a policy on housing, he said.

"We need at least $100 million in a program for housing," Lingenfelter said. "We have a crisis in housing right across the province [that's] simply not being dealt with."

The current standings in the provincial legislature have the Saskatchewan Party with 38 seats and the NDP with 20.
