Sask. figure skater Zoe Lesy, 16, dies in Manitoba crash

Port Elgin crash leaves 2 teens dead, another in critical condition

A 16-year-old girl from Saskatchewan who died in a car crash in southwestern Manitoba was a figure skater who was "full of life," according to her coach.

Zoe Lesy died after the car she was driving went out of control and crashed into a river near Harrison Bridge Road, about 55 kilometres west of Brandon, Man., at about 11 p.m. Sunday.

RCMP say the local fire department pulled the girl from the vehicle and rushed her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was the only person in the car.

Police believe poor weather and icy road conditions contributed to the crash. The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of an RCMP forensic collision reconstructionist.

"It's a complete tragedy ... somebody so young and just full of life and she was so happy," her figure skating coach, Patty Hole, told CBC News.

The teen was from the Carnduff, Sask., area, about 90 kilometres east of Estevan.

Hole, who had known Lesy for about eight years, said the teen had recently moved to Virden, Man., to train and attend high school there.

"She absolutely loved the school and loves skating and just loved her group of friends here," Hole said of Lesy.

Virden is about 140 kilometres by road northeast of Carnduff.

A Facebook post from Virden Collegiate says counsellors will be available for students and staff members at the school on Tuesday.

"As many of you are aware, we have suddenly and tragically lost a member of our Virden Collegiate School community," the school's message states in part.

"The passing of Zoe Lesy leaves us with a sense of loss that words cannot describe. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family for their loss."

Hole said Lesy's fellow figure skaters are at her home, mourning their friend's death.
