Saskatoon SPCA waiting to meet with escaped dog's puppies possible owner

The Saskatoon SPCA say they may have located the owner of a nursing German Shepherd picked up on Wednesday.

Someone spotted the dog walking near the corner of Idylwyld Drive and 33rd Street, attached to a heavy chain and a long stake. The person brought the dog to the SPCA and asked people in the city to get in touch if they knew anything about a litter of puppies that could possibly be left outside in the cold weather.

The German Shepherd is a nursing mother, who was uncomfortable because she appeared ready to nurse again. That made SPCA workers concerned for the safety of the puppies.

The group sent out an appeal, as temperatures in Saskatoon dipped below -13 degrees Celsius.

An animal protection officer took the dog back to the area where it had been picked up, walking it around on a long leash hoping that someone might recognize it, or that it would find its own way home.

That proved unsuccessful.

The group says if the dogs are outside, they may not survive for long. It's asking anyone with more information or tips about these pups to call at (306) 374-7387.

More to come.
