SD card lost at Halifax Costco sparks successful search

The woman on the video says this was Ryan's first trip to Disney, April 24, 2010. The SD card that contained the video was found in Halifax.

A Brookside, Nova Scotia family who lost a memory card of photos and video has been reunited with them a year after they disappeared, thanks to the determination of one woman.

Jo-Anne deLong has been waiting a year to meet the family whose memories she's been safely keeping.

"For me it was a labour of love," she said. "I didn't even know this family but I connected with them."

The memory card was all but ruined when deLong discovered it in wet snow in a parking lot in Bayers Lake last year.

"So I put it in a bag of rice and dried it out overnight and then took a hair dryer to it and just kept drying it," she said.

After hours of work, deLong was able to retrieve some of the photos and videos on the card.

What she saw on that card was about 60 videos of a family vacation and footage of a young boy playing hockey.

After a year of unsuccessful searching, she turned to the CBC for help. CBC News aired the story Monday night. That's how Ellen Sims heard that her SD card had been found.

Sims's son is the boy playing hockey on the card.

"We adopted him when he was just a newborn, so I mean, for us to keep all those memories — it's just awesome to get everything back," she said.

Some of the photos also included a family member who has since passed away.

DeLong burned the photos to a disc to further preserve them.

"I just can't believe that someone went out of their way to do all this," Sims said.

For deLong, it wasn't a big deal, she was just doing what she hopes others would do for her.

"Because it's the right thing to do," she said.
