Khizar Malik Ghalib, 19, ID'd as victim in high-speed motorcycle crash

The family of a 19-year-old Winnipeg man killed Tuesday night after his motorcycle crashed with an SUV on the city's south side has identified the victim as Khazir Malik Ghalib,

Ghalib was speeding on Waverley Street and crashed into the SUV as it turned onto Lee Boulevard. No one else was hurt.

His family says police told them he was going 130 km/h in a 70 km/hr zone when he crashed and that he died instantly.

Friends say Ghalib lived for adventure, whether it was skydiving in Dubai a few months ago, or speeding on his motorcycle.

His brother, Arsal, 11, can't take it in.

"They said he passed away and then I just went to my room," he said Wednesday, crying.

"It's not the same without him... How nice he was and funny," he said. "He made everyone laugh in my house."

Ghalib's friends say the Dakota Collegiate grad was heading to university in the fall and was interested in law or becoming a police officer.

But they say his greatest passion was his motorcycle. He even showed up at school last year wearing the helmet he bought for the bike.

"The picture of him in the hospital, I can't forget it. I don't know what to do. I still can't believe it. I still keep thinking he's going to come with his bike and drive it around the street and come back," said Muhammad Wahid, a friend.

"He was just a great guy. Super nice to everyone he met," said another, Anees Saeed.

They say Ghalib loved speed, but they are asking anyone who speeds to slow down .

"Don't go over the speed limit." said Wahid, and another friend Hassan Abid.

"They have that for a reason, you know, to keep people safe. They didn't just put that for nothing. They put that to keep people, everyone safe. Not only you. You're risking other people too."

A witness told a CBC videographer that paramedics performed CPR on Ghalib before he was rushed to hospital. He later died at hospital from his injuries.

Waverley was closed in the area until 5:30 a.m. Wednesday while police investigated the scene.
