Sharing the View: Information Morning makes its final visit

After four years of travelling art exhibits and remote broadcasts, CBC Radio’s Information Morning is in Arisaig enjoying its last community visit.

The Sharing the View Calendar and Art Auction in support of Feed Nova Scotia kicked off five years ago with 12 original paintings featuring the CBC studio on Sackville Street. It was meant to be a one-time effort, but it was so successful that staff decided to expand it province-wide.

Each year since then, Information Morning has invited four people to participate as marquee artists, who serve as the jury to select eight painters from submissions. The show then visits the home communities of those artists for an art reception and broadcast.

Friday morning, host Don Connolly is broadcasting from the Steinhart Distillery in Arisaig, which is on the shore of the Northumberland Strait.

Marquee artist Jaye Ouelette says: "Everyone here is so excited that CBC's Sharing the View project and Information Morning has come to our little corner of the world.

"Arisaig is a very tight knit community and we have been working hard to promote interest in the many attractions and the beauty of the area. And it is incredibly beautiful. I feel very privileged to be able to live here. We're excited to share our 'view' with CBC listeners!"

So far, Sharing the View has raised more than $360,000 for Feed Nova Scotia, and organizers expect this year's project, featuring realist paintings from around the province, to be the most successful yet.

"With colder days upon us, and Christmas just two months away, families who struggle with low income and hunger are starting to feel the added pressure and worry that is synonymous with this time of year," says Nick Jennery, executive director of Feed Nova Scotia .

"The Sharing the View project makes an incredible difference in our ability to help. Every dollar raised means we can distribute $15.74 worth of donated food — enough to feed someone for a day and a half.

"And the impact of that food runs so much deeper than physical nourishment. It’s about peace of mind, comfort and hope.

The Sharing the View paintings will be auctioned off online, starting Nov. 7.

The calendars will be available in Sobeys stores around the province starting Nov. 8.
