Slashed tires shock, disappoint area residents in St. John's

A number of residents in the west end of St. John's awoke to an unpleasant reality on Thursday — somebody slashed the tires on their vehicles.

The parking lot of an apartment complex on L'Anse aux Meadows Crescent off Blackmarsh Road had a high number of tires slashed, with about 85 tires receiving damage.

A large number of senior citizens live in the area.

Mary Powell, who has lived in the apartment complex for 11 years, said she's never had anything like this happen.

One of the tires on her vehicle was badly damaged.

"I took a walk around this morning and there was one vehicle from across the road, a small car with four tires that had been slashed, and it was being loaded onto a flatbed. It's shocking, disappointing," she told CBC News.

"I'm sure there are a lot of frustrated people here, upset people."

Resident Bruce Moulton, who has lived in the apartment complex for three years, also had his vehicle vandalized.

Moulton said he figured something was up when he noticed a group of people congregating on the parking lot.

"I was hoping it wasn't mine, so I went around the car and the back tire was slashed," he said.

"This is very inconvenient, I'm a swimmer and I can't go ... yet anyway. And you know, they have some good people in jail — and these people aren't."

Moulton said he was surprised with the vandalism.

"Who would do this, and in such an open and well-lit area? There's all kinds in the world. I guess they got some satisfaction out of it."

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating.
