    Smoke detectors, hot plate focus of fire investigation

    Fire investigators in Saskatoon say an unattended hot plate was behind a fire that killed one man and left ten people homeless. They also found that not all the smoke detectors in the building were connected.

    Officials from the fire said Tuesday they would be following-up with the owner of the building, landlord Jack Grover.

    "It is the landlord's responsibility to maintain and hold smoke alarm inspection records and these records are currently being requested by Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services," officials said Tuesday.

    According to officials, they found smoke detectors in all four living areas of the building but three were not functioning.

    One was installed, but not working while two others had been removed. One of those was found atop a toilet seat.

    The only one that was verified as working was found in the suite where Grover lived.

    Investigators also reported the fire started in a downstairs area, where there are five rental bedrooms.

    Someone in one of those bedrooms had a hot plate, but it was left unattended and inspectors believe bedding next to it caught fire.

    Sixty-year-old Daniel Shepherdson died in the fire, which tore through the house at 1827 Ave D North in Caswell Hill around 3 a.m. CST Thursday.

    Officials from the Salvation Army said Tuesday that all of the tenants who lost their homes have since found places to stay.
