    Highway 40 East reopens after fatal accident

    Highway 40 eastbound reopened Saturday afternoon, several hours after a fatal accident Friday night near the Anjou Interchange.

    The accident took place during the first major snowfall to hit Quebec in weeks.

    A 49-year-old man was killed in his car after it was struck by debris from a transport truck collision near the Roi-René exit.

    The transport truck crashed into several safety barrels on the side of the road before it hit a large metal road sign structure hanging overhead, which fell on the car.

    A second transport truck was also struck by the debris, but the driver escaped uninjured.

    Authorities shut the eastbound lanes overnight to finish their investigation on Saturday.

    Eastbound drivers were forced to exit at Ray-Lawson.

    Only one westbound lane was open, causing significant congestion on the Metropolitan.

    The accident is one of two deadly road collisions reported during Quebec's first major snowfall this month.

    In Shawinigan, one person died in a three-car collision on Route 157 Friday night.

    Police say slippery road conditions was a factor.

    Transport authorities say more than 100 road accidents were reported across the province on Friday, during the snow storm.

    Between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow fell on southern and central Quebec.

    The snow system moved east overnight, and will blow through the Eastern Townships, eastern Quebec and the Maritimes over the weekend.

    Flights at Montreal's Trudeau Airport are delayed or cancelled because of poor visibility.
