Soccer nets return to Yukon school fields

The Yukon’s Department of Education has brought some soccer nets back to school fields in Whitehorse.

The government took the nets off the fields this summer when a five-year-old in Watson Lake was killed by a collapsing net.

Eight nets were put back last Thursday on the field at Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Whitehorse.

Michelle Royle, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, said Suncor Evaluations inspected the nets.

"All the soccer goals have been inspected and those that have been found to be damaged will not be returned to the fields until they are appropriately repaired. All goals will be securely anchored correctly with anchor chains, secured with padlock to the anchor pin in the ground. Safety and warning labels will be affixed and clearly visible on all goals," she said.

Royle said other nets at other school fields will be returned before next spring.
