Sony Unveils World’s First 4K Smartphone

The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is the world’s very first 4K smartphone, enabling users to watch videos in incredible detail.

Unveiled at the annual IFA tech show in Berlin, the top-tier smartphone enables users to upscale videos and movies to 4K as well as shoot their own 4K footage and watch it back on the 5.5-inch display.

Sony is also claiming a whopping two-day battery life for the new handset.

Also known as ‘Ultra High-Definition, 4K is four times as detailed as HD and is so far only available on selected TVs and a handful of cameras.

While critics would argue that there is little point having an ultra high-definition display on such a small screen, the smartphone can easily be connected to a TV over DLNA for watching 4K footage on a TV that can do it justice.

Along with 4K, the Z5 Premium sports an improved 23MP camera boasting the world’s fastest autofocus in a smartphone, enabling users to lock onto whatever they’re shooting in a speedy 0.03 seconds - literally faster than the blink of an eye.

Sony also announced its new flagship Xperia Z5 flagship smartphone, which is the same of the Premium model but without the 4K capability.

The Xperia Z5 Premium is due to land in the UK in November, while the Z5 and smaller Z5 Compact will be available from October.
