Spike belt used to slow down driver owing 10K in traffic fines

An early-morning traffic stop in the west end of St. John's took a high-speed turn when the driver fled the scene.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary pulled over a 52-year-old man on Blackmarsh Road.

The driver refused to comply with police — and fled the scene in his vehicle.

A lengthy pursuit ensued which ended in the Witless Bay Line area.

RNC officers, along with the K-9 unit and members of the RCMP, arrested the man for dangerous driving, driving with a suspended licence and fleeing the scene.

There were no reported injuries and no vehicles were damaged — with the exception of the suspect vehicle's flat tire.

The RNC deployed a spike belt in an attempt to stop the suspect.

The accused was scheduled to appear in provincial court on Saturday.
