St. John's woman dances in the dark with Springsteen

A St. John’s woman marked her wedding anniversary in an extraordinary way this weekend after Bruce Springsteen invited her onstage during his Toronto concert.

Springsteen noticed Debbie Collingwood and her husband Peter when Peter hoisted a sign imploring the singer to dance with his wife on their anniversary during one of their favourite tunes, Dancing in the Dark.

The crowd lifted her over the security barricade and onto the stage, where she shared some dance moves with The Boss himself.

“I don’t know how it happened,” said Collingwood, who felt like she was “floating” over the audience.

“I was a little concerned I would flip my skirt in front 50,000 people,” she laughed. “But I managed to do it.”

Even after landing on stage, it felt like a dream, said Collingwood.

“I wanted to touch him to make sure it was real.”

Her husband is an even bigger fan. The show was one of 20 he’ll catch on this Springsteen tour alone.

“It was a lovely way to celebrate our 27th anniversary,” said Collingwood. The memorable experience was captured on video and is now on YouTube.

The Collingwoods met in 1985, the year after the song came out.
