Starved Alberta girls' parents charged with murder

Supporters of an Edmonton couple accused of starving their 2-year-old twin daughters leave court after a hearing Tuesday. They would only say details in the case have been exaggerated.

The Edmonton parents previously accused of starving their two-year-old twin daughters now face murder charges, Alberta Justice officials confirmed today.

The girls — allegedly starved and neglected since birth — were taken from their south-side home last May, weighing 5.9 kilograms and 7.3 kilograms.

One of the girls, who can only be identified as "M," died in September 2012 after a judge ordered she be taken off life support.

The parents are in jail and were facing two counts each of aggravated assault, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and failing to provide the necessities of life.

Each will now face an additional charge of second-degree murder.

The couple, who can't be named, will be back in court Friday.
