Starving dogs survived on owners' remains

The Saskatoon SPCA is wrestling with the fate of seven dogs rescued from a rural home near Yorkton after the animals ate the remains of their deceased owners.

RCMP last week found the couple — a man, 67, and woman, 57 — who had died on a rural property near Springside. Police do not suspect foul play, but the matter is being investigated by the coroner.

Police concluded that for more than a week the dogs — five Shelties and two mixed breeds — survived by eating the remains of the couple.

The question now is whether the dogs should be put down or given a new home.

Neighbour Margaret-Ann Irving, who knew the dogs' owners, said the animals cannot now be adopted.

"Those dogs need to be put down," she said. "You can't place a dog that's been eating on human flesh for two or three weeks and put it in a home where there might be a child."

Saskatoon SPCA spokeswoman Tiffiny Koback said it was not an automatic conclusion that the animals should be euthanized.

"They're simply doing what it takes to survive, given the circumstances," said Koback. "So we're not concerned that they're going to go out there and start looking at someone and equating it as a meal."

The dogs are being assessed by a local animal rescue organization to determine whether they are adoptable. Potential owners would be told of their background.

The provincial SPCA said the fate of the dogs in cases like this rests with the local shelter, in this case, the Saskatoon agency.

They did what they needed to to survive. Just as any HUMAN would as well. If a human was forced to eat another human to live, would you want to put down the human for fear they might attack and eat someone the next time they got hungry - of course not. These animals are not automatically going to equate people as food just because they were forced to eat the remains of their owners, nor should they be put down for it. The very idea is beyond ridiculous. People are too damn quick to want to kill an animal for convenience.

Are you out of your mind? Civilized human would have never eaten human flesh in any circumstances ever, unless this human becomes an animal. As soon a human becomes an animal there is no return. And, it is very unlikely that anybody would ever want to adopt those dogs, after what they did to their owners.

        @Another Planet
You really must be from another planet. The dog's did nothing to the owners, all they did was what any animal (Humans included) would do to survive. It's not like they killed the owners to eat them. The owners died, the dogs were starving and they found an opportunity to survive and took it. If you truly believe that a "civilized human" would eat human flesh if that was the only means of survival then you're living in a dream world.

I would like to know how you know it is "very unlikely" that anybody would adopt
these dogs. Clearly you are a super intelligent being from another planet...

Another Planet.. u ever watch that movie "Alive" based on True events.. im pretty sure u would do what u needed to ,to survive based on the circumstances..unless u were game to face a very painfull slow death.im sure u would never think to now cause u were never faced with it. but the survivors in the movie survived cause they were forced to eat human flesh to stay "Alive" ..i dont think they turned into animals..or after they were rescued i doubt they went out and thought i wanna eat humans again...good grief...same goes for the dogs im sure they would rather eat dog food if given the "CHOICE" .. like really think about it...

Reminds me of the plane crash on the mountain in Brazil, where the survivors were forced to eat the dead, so they could remain alive.... uh... but they did not euthanize them DID THEY??? So what the hell is the freaken difference here, these dogs wanted to survive and now they are threatened with death for their actions.... I hate people who value LIFE so very little.

you can't possibly compare humans and dogs here man, c'mon
      • Vicky 10 months ago
Why not? Some humans are worse than any animal on this planet.

Matt read again I said LIFE LIFE, I think we as people think we are sooooo special we can control and distroy anything we want, BUT not ourselves for doing the same damn thing. How hypocritical is this? A Dog A Cat A Horse, any critter VALUES its life as much as we do our own and we should respect that.

I feed my dog raw meat - chicken, beef, lamb, etc - and that hasn't inspired him to start killing other animals for food. The SPCA folks should know better. And if they don't, they have no business being in business.

I would never feed my dogs raw meat. It is not healthy. Ask any Vet.

Raw meat is fine for dogs. Ask any vet. I know countless people who feed their dogs a raw food diet. Google it. That's what dogs are meant to eat (from back when they were wild).

My Great Dane might lie beside my cold, dead corpse until he too died of starvation or a broken heart. My Black Lab on the other hand would be waiting patiently for the Dane to die too so she could eat both of us! She loves food and she isn't fussy about what it is!

My dog comes from a shelter but in her background she was a sled dog abandoned with the whole 20 dog mush team and left to starve. When the cops got there, 2 dogs were dead and eaten by the others dogs, 3 dogs had to be euthanised and the rest were adopted. My pet now lives with another dog and doesn't seem anymore blood thirsty than that sharing the home with 2 cats and another dog not to mention our children. Guess what? We all get along. The dogs in this story did what they had to to survive. I wonder what happened to the owners though.

i think it was a 50/50 chance, i say half of the dogs in your story are vicious man-eating monsters and would kill an infant while laughing

Sad - survived under extreme circustance, only to be destroyed anyway? Should be fully assesed first. If Michael Vick's pitbulls can be rehabilitated why can't these creatures?
    • Rgc  •  10 months ago
The poor dogs, they did nothing wrong. Why would they be put down for doing what any carnivore would have done in the same situation (yes humans would, and have done the same thing many times ) hopefully the SPCA will actually do their job this time and find a good home for these poor creatures

No one even considered "putting down" the survivors of the Uruguayan people that crashed in the Andes in 1972. These dogs did what they needed to do to survive....leave them alone!!
    • mlw  •  10 months ago
I am not even going to finish reading these comments. The dogs did what they had to do to survive, that is all..and it is no less than anyone would do if they absolutely had to. Some of you can say no way, I would never, but until you are in that situation, never say never. Maybe a new home life with children would not be ideal, but there are lots of homes with no children if people are so worried about it. If the animal is loved, fed, taken care of, then most times there is nothing to worry about.

I would have eaten my dog if I had to. My dog would eat me if it had to. Whats the prob??
    • Lady in red  •  10 months ago
It is downright stupid to ssume the dogs want to eat people from now on. They were hungry. People have eaten other people.Once they get regular food they will be ok. By now they can't even rember that they ate their oners.. Some dogloving people will have to adopt them.
    • gaynor.powell  •  10 months ago
Oh for God's sake people...those "human remains" were just MEAT to teh starving dogs. Under normal circumstances thaose dogs are no more likely to attack a person or chow down on someone than I am. This is a ridiculous situation, as long as the dogs are friendly, well-socialzed and trained, why on earth would they even consider putting them down. (P.S. neighbour sounds like a bit of a drama queen if you ask me.)

These dogs didn't kill their owners and ate them, the poor hungry dogs mostlikely start to eat on them when their owners became nothing else to them anymore then rotten, smelling cadavers, and what other choice did they had? That doesn't mean that they now got a appetite for human flesh and would kill somebody to get it! these dogs were starving and there where cadavers to eat, a cadaver smells different then something alive. 1972 a Chilean Air Force crashed, they found the 14 survivors after 10 weeks, guess on what they lived? doesn't made them to cannibals. Of course there is a difference about Human and animal
instincts, but both have a survival instinct, and that came through in both stories alike. Hope they will get a chance and will find a good home. Maybe that SPCA could ask Ceasar Millan, the well known dog whisperer, for help!

    • Amy  •  10 months ago
someone once told me that if I let my dog eat anything raw that he would then become more likely to bite people!! What a bunch of crap. I'm sure if the kibble bag was somewhere that the dogs could access it, they would have eaten that. If these dogs are put down, that will be a tragedy in addition to the tragedy of two mysteriously dead people.
    • cinou_mtl  •  10 months ago
Didn't survivors of a plane crash - some years ago - survive by eating human flesh? That of their fellow passengers. What's the problem with those dogs? They should be put up for adoption, no question about it.
    • tranin2  •  10 months ago
dogs can get quite violent when in groups and it does not say for sure how the ppl died, just that its being investigated so who knows what happend
    • David Campbell  •  10 months ago
Like all of God's creatures they wanted to survive. Even civilized people have made the same choice. Should they have been put down?? These dogs are sentient and know on some level what has happened and are probably horrified. Let them live.
    • S.  •  10 months ago
They should definetly be adopted to people who are aware of the situation. They dogs must have been traumatized to be left alone in that house with their dead owners. They were doing what they needed to survive. People have resorted to the same thing in desperate situations, do we kill those that had to resort to cannibalism to survive? The animals will adjust gratefully back to dog food if they haven't already. They just need to be given to a loving home where the owners can spend a lot of time with them to reassure them that they won't be abandoned.
