Students impress with skills in trades
About 450 high school and post-secondary students from across Saskatchewan are in Prince Albert taking part in a skilled trades competition. The competition covers everything from baking to welding.
This year's event is the 16th annual Saskatchewan Provincial Skills Competition.
Organizers said they are acutely aware of Saskatchewan's need for skilled tradespeople and hope the spirit of the competition inspires young people to pursue a career in that field.
"They may say, 'That's something that I enjoy and I want to be in a career that I really enjoy,'" Al Gabert, executive director for Skills Canada Saskatchewan said Friday. "So, this is [an] opportunity to get involved. That's what they do. They'll continue on with carpentry, or outdoor power and rec or small engines or whichever."
The competition is also a place where potential employers hang out, looking to scout up and coming talent.
Winners from the Saskatchewan competition advance to national finals in Toronto.
