Surge of water expected in Winnipeg

An ice jam on the Assiniboine River near Holland, Man., has broken up and will result in a temporary rush of water into Winnipeg, officials say.

"The flow surge will cause a rise in the Red and Assiniboine rivers in Winnipeg of between 1 and 1 ½ feet on Saturday," officials noted in their latest bulletin, issued Friday afternoon.

"This will increase the current James Avenue level of 19 feet to just over 20 feet. With continued floodway operation, the river level will drop to about 18.5 feet James Avenue by Sunday," they added.

The city said no additional sandbagging would be needed as properties along Winnipeg's rivers have protection in place to meet the surge.

"The crest for the Red River in Winnipeg is expected to occur at the end of April," the city noted. For now, the city said the call for volunteer help with sandbagging was on hold. They may reactivate the call, if needed, for the upcoming Easter long weekend.

Unless your insurance company is going to cover you for the loss of your home , every time it gets hit with a flood , don't expect govt. money which is tax payer money to be used to bail you out . the natives destroy their homes and we have to build them new ones . you choose to live in a high risk flooding area , and taxpayers are expected to fix your house . so now my taxes go up again . do you all think govt money means they have a big tree that has money growing off the branches . lets get this straight GOVT. MONEY IS our federal taxes , provincial taxes , city taxes , property taxes , school taxes , gas taxes GST , PST . If the day ever comes when only the politicians are taxed then we can call it govt. money . and don't even think about drinking or smoking to relieve some of the stress from all these taxes because there are hidden taxes on those items as well , and thats before you pay the second and third taxes on those items GST and PST . but don't fear , after they get all the smokers to quit and the govt. loses millions in cigarette tax , they'll just tax the non smoker more to recover that loss .

    • Paolo Gabriele: from papal butler to accused traitor

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Paolo Gabriele was always a reserved, almost shy man, as his position required. Was it money? Probably not. ...

Iran has enough uranium for 5 bombs: expert

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has significantly stepped up its output of low-enriched uranium and total production in the last five years would be enough for at least five nuclear weapons if refined much further, a U.S. security institute said. The Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), a think-tank which tracks Iran's nuclear program closely, based the analysis on data in the latest report by the U.N.
