An ice jam on the Assiniboine River near Holland, Man., has broken up and will result in a temporary rush of water into Winnipeg, officials say.
"The flow surge will cause a rise in the Red and Assiniboine rivers in Winnipeg of between 1 and 1 ½ feet on Saturday," officials noted in their latest bulletin, issued Friday afternoon.
"This will increase the current James Avenue level of 19 feet to just over 20 feet. With continued floodway operation, the river level will drop to about 18.5 feet James Avenue by Sunday," they added.
The city said no additional sandbagging would be needed as properties along Winnipeg's rivers have protection in place to meet the surge.
"The crest for the Red River in Winnipeg is expected to occur at the end of April," the city noted. For now, the city said the call for volunteer help with sandbagging was on hold. They may reactivate the call, if needed, for the upcoming Easter long weekend.
