Langley man faces charges for high-speed chase through Surrey

A 26-year-old Langley man is facing several charges following an hour-long dangerous driving chase through South Surrey and Cloverdale that sent an RCMP officer to hospital on Thursday night.

Surrey police launched the pursuit after receiving several 911 calls about erratic driving around 9 p.m. PT.

“[The] driver of the vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed, driving into oncoming traffic and generally driving in a very erratic fashion,” said Sgt. David MacDonald, with Surrey RCMP.

Police began tracking the vehicle, described by witnesses as a Pontiac Trans Am, and when the suspect eventually turned into a dead-end on 51B Avenue from 192 Street in Cloverdale, he was arrested.

Surrey RCMP are recommending charges against the man, who is known to police, after finding several stolen license plates, break and enter tools, electronic equipment and keys in the car, Sgt. Dale Carr said in a statement. His name has yet to be released by police.

“Prolific offenders will often steal vehicles or license plates and use them to commit other crimes," Carr said.

"In this case, the suspect put the lives of our officers and the public at risk through dangerous driving despite facing a 10-year driving prohibition.”

Anyone with further information about the incident is asked to contact the Surrey RCMPat 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Meanwhile the RCMP officer, who crashed his SUV into a ditch during the pursuit, was treated for injuries and later released.
