Tampered-with potato found in Nova Scotia, traced to P.E.I.
A P.E.I. potato with a needle inside it was found in a Nova Scotia store Thursday.
Yarmouth County RCMP say the tampered-with tuber turned up at the Co-op Store in Lower West Pubnico.
“The store manager turned over a russet potato a customer had just returned that had a needle inside it,” Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said Friday afternoon.
RCMP traced the potato back to P.E.I. and found it had been sold in a five-kilogram bag under the name Market Town.
The store put them out for sale on Oct. 2, but took them off the shelves when the potatoes were recalled that same day. However, sixty-two bags had already been sold.
Today’s pin-stuck potato is the only one found in that part of Nova Scotia, RCMP said. They urged people to be careful when handling potatoes bought in early October.
Police have received reports of tampered-with potatoes in Neils Harbour, N.S., one in Musgrave Harbour, N.L. and one in Chance Cove, N.L.
All the potatoes contained a metal object.
In all of the instances, the foreign metal objects were discovered prior to consumption and no one was injured.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Linkletter Farms Ltd. of Summerside issued a voluntary recall of bags of Link, Market Town Co-op and Carr's, blue and brown striped potatoes last month.
The products were sold in P.E.I., Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
