Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 2)

Top 5 things to do in and near Winnipeg this weekend (Aug. 21-23)

I’m not going to lie – a few of my picks this week are a little strange, so I hope you’ll give them a chance.

There’s an Evil Dead musical at the Park Theatre, a ‘90s band at Ozzy’s, a great little indie show at The Good Will and some outdoor yoga in a wildlife preserve.

There's also an amazing DJ dance party at Union Saturday night.

It's going to be a little crisp -- so dress warm and don't stress too much about your costume.

WHAT: THEATRE – Evil Dead: The musical

When: Friday, Oct. 31 at 9 p.m.

Where: Park Theatre at 698 Osborne St.

Cost: $25 or $35 for a spot in the “splatter zone”

This is the first time I’ve endorsed an event with a “splatter zone” that offers blood-shielding ponchos to people who pay for premium seats – but I feel like it could be pretty cool.

The Park Theatre is hosting Evil Dead: The Musical on Friday night.

It is exactly what it sounds like and apartment has lots of “foul language, sexual innuendo and extreme violence” so it’s basically just like the movie and nothing like any musical you’ve ever been to before.

I haven’t seen it, so I can’t promise it will be awesome, but I can say it is an absolutely crazy idea and at the very least should entertain you – a lot.

I’m going to say leave this one off your list if you’re not already an Evil Dead fan tho. The horror-comedy franchise is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Oh PS: you can’t go unless your 18, if that wasn’t already obvious.

WHAT: MUSIC – GOB plays Ozzy’s

When: Friday, Oct. 31 at 9 p.m.

Where: Ozzy’s at 160 Osborne St.

Cost: $20

Remember that music video for that sort-of punk band from the late ‘90s where zombies played soccer and that one guy’s legs fell off?

Well, that was on the air when music videos were still a thing on Much Music, and now, the guys who made it (and a whole bunch of other punk-lite hits from the ‘00s) are going to be in Winnipeg.

GOB is playing Ozzy’s on Halloween night for $20 a ticket. And yes, they really are still a thing.

They’re playing with a few locals including Dangercat, who are a fun show all on their own.

Do your 14-year-old self a favour and go relive some sort-of-punk memories from the days of dial-up and landlines.

You don’t have to stay all night. But I’m betting I Hear You Calling won’t be played until the very end.

WHAT: MUSIC – Federal Lights at The Good Will

When: Saturday, Nov. 1 at 10 p.m.

Where: The Good Will at 625 Portage Ave.

Cost: $10

There’s a lovely little lineup at the Good Will this weekend with Federal Lights, Adam Hanney and SMRT.

The brand new Portage Avenue venue is wasting no time booking some awesome local acts for super affordable prices.

If you’re not familiar with Federal Lights, they’re a sweet little local indie outfit that anyone can enjoy without knowing their stuff beforehand.

This will probably be a bit of a quieter show – their new album isn’t as get-up-and-dance as their last one was.

But The Good Will is a great place to get a good beer, sit down and see a good show. Only thing is, it gets packed fast so show up early (I really mean it.)

WHAT: DANCE – Halloween at Union

When: Saturday, Nov. 1 at 9:30 p.m.

Where: Union Sound Hall at 110 Market Ave.

Cost: $10

If you’re not all Halloweened out by the time Saturday night rolls around, resurrect your costume and head down to Union Sound Hall in the Exchange.

Their patented fun Halloween dance party is back and the lovely, talented, vinyl-spinning DJs Co-Op and Hunnicutt will be there to make you dance and sweat and stuff.

The theme is no name brand, so be creative with your get-up because there are prizes for best individual and group costumes.

If your brilliant costume didn’t get the recognition it deserved Friday night, take it out for a second swing and see if you can win something at Union.

Drinks aren’t as cheap as other venues though, so factor that into the low ticket price!

WHAT: ACTIVITY – Yoga at Fort Whyte

When: Saturday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m.

Where: Fort Whyte Alive at 1961 McCreary Rd.

Cost: $15

Let’s face it, we’re all going to need a detox Saturday morning, and Fort Whyte Alive has a pretty great option.

The wildlife preserve is hosting a 90 minute indoor-outdoor yoga session. For $15 you do some cardio in the forests of Fort Whyte followed by your choice of indoor or outdoor yoga.

You have to bring your own yoga mat, and you should probably dress warm.

You can check out some bison chilling by a stream, see some birds doing their thing and breathe super fresh air when you’re done.

And once you’re done checking out the scenery/working off that horrible hangover, you can stop by their café for breakfast – or head back into town for a mimosa at Corner Stone.
