Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Dec. 5-7)

This weekend the show you shouldn’t miss is at The Good Will Friday night, the best-friend hang is at Cinematheque and your hot date is at Smith on Saturday.

Also, it’s pretty cold out so I’m all over recommending places you can eat food at and hang out for a while. This week? Tallest Poppy!

Oh, and if you’re wondering when I’ll get over complaining about the cold – the answer is May.

Have a good weekend, you guys. I think we all deserve hugs for making it through another frigid week.

WHAT: MUSIC – FINN EP release at The Good Will

When: Friday, Dec. 5 at 9 p.m.

Where: The Good Will at 625 Portage Ave.

Cost: $10

This is the don’t-miss show of the weekend. I had no idea who these guys were until the guy who booked them explained how talented they are. And he wasn’t lying.

FINN is this great, local five-piece band that sounds a lot like Local Natives – but not so much that they don’t totally justify their existence.

Their sound probably is more on the side of indie-rock than folk, but it’s overall a pretty relaxing, rich listen. They’re new, they’re good and they’re likely going places. Check out their track River’s Shore if you’re still not sold.

Anyway, this weekend these guys are releasing a five-song EP at The Good Will. It’s going to be a fantastic show.

I’m going to hazard a guess there won’t be dancing though, so cool it with the drinks, everyone.

WHAT: FILM – A food doc at Cinematheque

When: Friday, Dec. 5 at 9 p.m. or Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

Where: Cinematheque at 100 Arthur St.

Cost: $9

You only have two chances to see Just Eat It this weekend, and you might want to jump on them.

It’s a doc about how much food we waste – but not just throwing out leftovers and accidentally letting a head of lettuce go bad in your crisper – it’s how much the industry wastes because a banana wasn’t the right curve or a peach had some dimpled skin.

The gist of it is a couple decides to only eat “foods that have been discarded,” and they talk about our obsession with expiry dates and other stuff like that with experts.

The images are staggering, and the couple at the centre of it is fairly normal and endearing and won’t irritate you.

Cinematheque is playing it at 9 p.m. Friday night, and it’s a Hot Docs darling, which means smart people who know things about documentaries really liked it.

WHAT: FOOD – The Tallest Poppy

When: Friday, Saturday or Sunday

Where: The Tallest Poppy at 103 Sherbrook St.

Cost: Depends what you order

Yeah, I know. It’s cold out. It’s easier to make a sandwich and watch Netflix than it is to head out into the world where the air hurts your face and there’s the considerable danger of slipping and falling on your butt.

But if you can do it, and I think you should, go get a dinner or at least a drink or two at The Tallest Poppy this weekend.

It was gone for so long, and it’s nice that it’s back.

If you haven’t been yet, and I bet you have, they have good food and extraordinarily nice people. Plus it’s kind of dimly lit and cozy, which is nice on an overcast winter day.

WHAT: MORE MUSIC – SC Mira at Smith

When: Friday or Saturday night

Where: Smith at 75 Forks Market Rd.

Cost: Depends what you order (Not cheap, sadly)

Has everyone already heard of Smith? It opened in September, but I feel like it’s still not that well known.

It’s the new restaurant at Inn at the Forks, and it’s pretty cute. It has fancy drinks and fancy tables and antler-type things that hang over said tables.

This weekend there’s the added bonus of having SC Mira there Friday and Saturday night to play sets while you have food and drinks with people you like.

I’ve been on a folk-indie kick lately so obviously these guys are in that vein.

They have a really distinct sound thanks to SC’s voice — which is one of my favourites in the city — and they keep it pretty accessible.

Only downside to this one is there’s a good chance people will be talking while they have dinner so you might want to sit close to the stage because hissing at people to be quiet would be discouraged.

WHAT: KID STUFF – Holiday Party at the WAG

When: Sunday, Dec. 7 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Winnipeg Art Gallery at 300 Memorial Blvd.

Cost: FREE

OK people with kids, this is your chance to impress them with your ability to be an interesting person who plans fun things.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery does this thing called Family Sunday, and this weekend they’re making it a holiday party.

There will be music, games, hot chocolate and even cookies.

Plus, you can make some ornaments and hang them on the giant tree they have there. Oh, and Santa will be there to take some snaps with kids too. Did I mention it’s free? And indoors? It’s both of those things.
