Tractor-trailer driver dead after explosion on Highway 401 near Mallorytown

A Toronto-area man in his 60s has died after he lost control of his tractor-trailer, which then exploded on impact when it struck a rock embankment on Highway 401 near Mallorytown, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police say the crash happened at 4 a.m. Thursday on the highway east of the Mallorytown Service Centre.

Early stages of the investigation show the tractor-trailer was heading east when it the driver lost control at a curve in the road, crossed the median into the westbound lanes and drove through a metal barrier.

The vehicle then exploded immediately upon striking a rock embankment. The trailer was empty so there was no spill, according to police.

Police said the driver was able to free himself from the tractor-trailer and a passerby helped him to a nearby ditch.

Paramedics rushed him to the Brockville General Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, police added.

All lanes of Highway 401 reopened just after 1 p.m. Thursday, about nine hours after the crash occurred.

Police continue to investigate.
