Trout fishing may be hampered by snow, ice

There may be fewer places to fish trout this year in P.E.I. because of the harsh winter weather.

Trout season opens April 15, but heavy snow and ice buildup means some waters won't be accessible.

"The majority of the estuaries are probably going to be iced in, so people that do a lot of fishing from boats in the early part of the season, it's going to make it difficult," said Dale Cameron, Trout Unlimited Canada Prince County chapter spokesman.

"Ponds will be iced over, so streams will be open in places, but they're not going to be open everywhere. So it's definitely going to restrict the amount of angling opportunities."

This is an issue across the province, but western P.E.I. has been most affected, said Cameron.

Despite weather conditions, the season is currently scheduled to open as planned.
