TTC streetcars still diverting after 4-alarm fire
A handful of TTC streetcar routes continue to be affected by the four-alarm fire that ripped through a market at the corner of Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East this weekend.
The TTC has advised customers through its website that its 504, 505 and 506 streetcars are still being forced to divert from their regular route as a result of Saturday's fire. Shuttle buses are operating.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 361 Broadview Ave., at about 5 a.m. on Saturday.
People living in a dozen nearby apartments were forced to leave their homes when the fire broke out.
Dozens of firefighters would eventually be involved in the effort to bring the fire under control.
The fire destroyed the market, which Coun. Paula Fletcher described as part of "an iconic corner" in the neighbourhood.
"It's going to have to be completely demolished," Fletcher said Saturday, when speaking with reporters in the aftermath of the fire.
That demolition process has required the dismantling of the TTC overhead streetcar wires at the Broadview and Gerrard intersection.
The TTC says it won’t be able to resume regular streetcar service until that demolition process is complete and the wires are reinstalled.
As a result, it is advising customers using the affected routes to leave an extra half-hour to get where they need to go during morning and afternoon rush-hour periods.
