Turks and Caicos to join Nova Scotia?

The last time Canada discussed having the tropical islands of Turks and Caicos join the country, the Nova Scotia Legislature proposed it do so as a part of this province.

A decade later, one Canada MP is again charming our southern neighbour, but this time the man leading the courtship says it could join as a province of its own.

Peter Goldring, MP for Edmonton, says a marriage between the Caribbean islands and Canada would promote development on the islands. With a population of 30,000, it would have less than half the population of peninsular Halifax.

It would also be the first British overseas territory to join Canada since Newfoundland and Labrador did in 1949.

Goldring visited the islands on a fact-finding mission in 2004.
