U.S. retail giant Marshalls to open in Winnipeg Thursday

Winnipeggers will get their first look at a new Marshalls store in the city’s Polo North Complex on Thursday morning.

The U.S. retailer known for offering designer brands at a cheaper price is the latest retail giant to open in the city, after IKEA and Victoria's Secret landed in recent months.

“We will have thousands of items coming in every single week. So, every shopping experience is going to be unique,” said Theresa Quick, Marshalls’ spokesperson, adding it stocks more than 8,000 pairs of shoes at a time.

Marshalls wasn’t the first and won’t be the last mega-retailer to set up shop in Winnipeg. Bed, Bath and Beyond is slated to open in the city this summer or fall.

Liz Crawford worked to style the Marshalls location in Winnipeg. She thinks the new range of options will have fewer Manitobans heading south of the border to shop.

“So many of us use to flock to the U.S. to shop and now it’s not as necessary to do that,” said Crawford.

“There are so many great things coming to town here.”

Winnipegger Joan Frykas said Marshalls could take a bite out of profits for existing retailers in the city.

“We didn’t know anything about Marshalls, and the gentleman told us it’s similar to Winners, so I think this should be good,” said Frykas.

“I think it will give Winners a bit of a run for their money.”
