Union slams Canada Post delivery changes

Dozens of postal workers were delivering mail in the Maritimes over the long weekend due to a backlog caused by structural changes made by Canada Post, according to the union representing the employees.

Across the Maritimes, the carriers were logging extra hours Saturday to clear up an excess of undelivered mail.

Jeff Beckerson, president of the Nova Scotia division of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, said thousands of letters and parcels are sitting in plants waiting to be delivered.

"They are paying workers about $50 an hour on a Saturday to clear up the backlog that Canada Post created," he said this weekend.

In August, Canada post announced it would stop using three separate trucks to drop off mail at collection boxes, deliver parcels, and pick up outgoing mail.

The Crown corporation said the new delivery system would save $250 million over six years.

Beckerson said the backlog shows the new system is failing.

Halifax resident Jan Devox said she heard something out of the ordinary on Saturday — mail being dropped in her mailbox.

"I thought I'd check it, I said, 'I am sure I checked it yesterday,' but yeah, it went there today," said Devox.

yeah I'll bet money the union was purposely slowing down work to ensure it would fail. they like the status quo of doing jack squat for being glorified delivery boys. Canada Post has sucked for years anyways. If its important, courier it. Otherwise you're taking your chances as to when (and IF) it will arrive.

Canada Post used to be much better even 10 years ago. They have gone downhill since then. I rarely get any mail on Fridays except flyers, but I was told that postmen get paid extra money over their regular salaries for delivering flyers. I used to send packages fairly often to overseas but now its so much more expensive, I don't do it often now. And what happened to those 6900 Colon cancer results which disappeared in the mail? and there is another case of important missing papers -in The Toronto Star yesterday Sept.3. Canada Post is like the Health care system and College of Physicians and surgeons. They all need a major overhaul.

Using Canada Post for anything in 2011 is akin to attaching an envelope to a team of snails. Couriers do it faster and more reliable. Often cheaper.

no they don't do it any faster and definitely not cheaper

We very rarely get any mail delivery on any Friday... why is it that the postal employees can only find time to make deliveries when they are on overtime....typical fraud by another goverment organization.... no education needed other than to be able to read the address yet they think they deserve to get paid $25 or $30 per hour.... what a joke!

I use couriers whenever I can, at least I know my packages will get delivered... not stuck in some government office because the delivery person was "too scared" to deliver for some assinine reason (ie: dog in yard or snow on sidewalk or its too hot or too cold, etc).

DEF, we simply do not require mail delivery like that any more...in fact, we do not need the current delivery schedule of once every day...could probably get by very well on three times a week. Most of the mail now is junk mail. Back when mail delivery was twice a day, mail was the primary means of communicating between people...this simply is no longer the case.

Canada Post management is purposefully sabatoging the crown corporation in order to justify privatizing it to the profit of Harper's corporate pals.

What the union is really pissed about is that they get none of that extra overtime wages for their own pockets. The union would rather Canada Post hire more workers so they can line their pockets with more money as they charge the workers an hours pay per week for every union member. Then when Canada Post does not need them the union fights to keep the jobs even though they are not required. By working overtime the union gets nothing. Good on ya Canada Post, fuuck the unions.

Cut he mail back. Here's the email address of the Minister in charge of Canada Post.
      denis.lebel@parl.gc.ca
Write him and tell him we don't need daily residential mail. 2 to 3 times a week is plenty.

LOL!! Wouldn't be Any possiibility of resistance to change by the posties now would there?? After all.....a couple of truck deliveries have been cut back.....so it only makes sense they are faced with Volumous mail!! lol!! Getting Overtime and complaining.....lol!! What a crock the Posties and Union have become. Not to worry.....many folks are moved or moving away from these services at any rate.....to unreliable. Seems we have had Saturday Mail Delivery where we are in Ontario for years.....waste of time....but....they still deliver....anything they held back thru the week to justify their working. Get serious Canada Post....shut down Saturday Delivery....who the hell needs it?? Get down to the "Right Size" work force and Services.Trim the Fat and save the $$$

Harper Appointee wants to cut mail delivery to 3 4 times a week.
    • RedShadow  •  8 months ago
You make me laugh. "privatise", "they should pass only 2 or 3 times a week" And then this.
Make up your mind stupid people. You want good service or crappy service? Typical Canadians...always whining and crying. You have the service that you deserve. My clients get premium service on my route. No letters or package is late. Yes I do 8 to 12 hours per week more, but I LOVE my job and service is important to me. I don't give a crap about the changes of service. My client will still have their mail in the end. Over the last 5 years I went to 2500 mail articles to 3500 DAILY!! My route pass from 957 doors to 1271...I DON'T CARE..they still pay me.

Iran has enough uranium for 5 bombs: expert

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has significantly stepped up its output of low-enriched uranium and total production in the last five years would be enough for at least five nuclear weapons if refined much further, a U.S. security institute said. The Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), a think-tank which tracks Iran's nuclear program closely, based the analysis on data in the latest report by the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which was issued on Friday. ...
