Mazatlan vacation prices plummet after brutal attack

Travel agents are reporting a steep decline in vacation rates to a Mexican tourist destination where a Calgary woman was brutally beaten last weekend.

Sheila Nabb remains in hospital following an assault at the Hotel Riu Emerald in Mazatlan.

Back at home, prices on vacation packages offering a stay at the Riu and numerous other venues in Mazatlan have plunged by as much as 40 per cent, according to Mahmood Tejpar, owner of the Marlin Travel in Marlborough Mall.

“It has definitely had a negative affect,” he said. “I feel sorry because these Mexicans rely on tourism so much.”

Tejpar and two other locations contacted by Metro said fears about the attack only seem to have impacted interest in Mazatlan, as prices at numerous other hotspots in the country remain steady,

Ken Stewart, president and managing director for Crowfoot Travel Solutions, has stayed at the Riu and enjoyed it a great deal.

“I have some clients that just booked yesterday, they are going down to Mazatlan next week,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have a problem going down or even taking my family and going down there ... you travel smart, play smart and pay attention to your surroundings.”

This e-mail is coming to you from Mazatlan, where I have been for the past 2 weeks.
It is my view the agent is being somewhat dismissive of the realities of Mazatlan.
Relative to 3 to 5 years ago, this city is a ghost town. Tourists are obvious by their absene.
No queston. there are a few here but very few. Cruise ships don't stop at this port due to the violence. Heard today of a lady having her gold necklace ripped off her neck as she was walking down a busy street in broad daylight. The real issue here is that locals are becoming desperate due to lack of opportunity of gainfull employment and this issue is exacerbated as the tourist #s declining further. Store fronts are empty as one has never seen before.
I doubt if I will return and frankly, I couldn't recommend Mazatlan as a destination resort. It is going to take 1 or 2 decades to turn things around here and that will only happen after the drug issue is resolved.

We are currently on vacation in Mazatlan. Very beautiful here but I agree with Gary, it is a ghost town here. So many shops closed down, so much poverty outside the resort area. Lots of police patrolling and lots of friendly people. Feel very safe. The beaches and tourist areas are so empty, the people here are really hurting here financially.

stupid clients, you are not safe in your hotel...so good luck to you and bring a credit card to pay for your injuries once the taxi driver takes you to a private clinic so he can get a kick back for taking you. Then the scam works continues with the clinic charging you 45, 000 and not treating you, another cabbie may just take you to the hospital before you die.

If you can't vacation in Mexico, perhaps the Mexicans can immigrate to Canada?

Was Einstein wrong - or was the cable loose?

GENEVA/CHICAGO (Reuters) - The world of science was upended last year when an experiment appeared to show one of Einstein's fundamental theories was wrong - but now the lab behind it says the result could have been caused by a loose cable. Physicists at the CERN research institute near Geneva appeared to contradict Albert Einstein's 1905 Special Theory of Relativity last year when they reported that sub-atomic particles called neutrinos could travel fractions of a second faster than light. ...

EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - A woman pushing her child in a stroller in downtown El Paso, Texas, was struck by an assault rifle bullet fired from across the border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on Tuesday, mayor John Cook said. After Juarez police responded to a carjacking about half a mile from the border, a gunfight broke out between police and the carjackers, Cook said. A bullet -- a type used in assault weapons such as M16s -- penetrated and exited the woman's calf, he said. ...

Argentine commuter train crashes, killing 49 people

Passengers said the force of the collision propelled the second train car inside the first carriage, trapping dozens of people in the wreckage alongside the busy platforms at Once station. Officials said faulty brakes were suspected of causing the accident and …

    • Four more bodies found on Italian cruise liner

ROME (Reuters) - Salvage workers have found four more bodies in the submerged Costa Concordia cruise liner, bringing the confirmed number of dead to 21 on the ship that ran aground and capsized off the Italian coast last month, authorities said on Wednesday. Bad weather has prevented divers from recovering the four bodies from the ship's submerged deck, and 11 people remain missing, authorities said.
