Malfunctioning Woodroffe Avenue rail signal fixed

A Via Rail signal near Fallowfield station is working normally again after an electrical malfunction Monday afternoon.

Via Rail crews were dispatched to the Woodroffe Avenue rail crossing after an "electrical issue" with the signal's advanced warning device caused it to malfunction, Via spokesperson Mylène Bélanger said in a statement.

The crossing's gates were unexpectedly staying down after a train had gone through, Bélanger said.

Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder, whose ward includes the Fallowfield area, tweeted earlier in the day that the city had been notified of "possible malfunctions" involving the signal.

According to Via, the signal was back to operating correctly shortly after 4 p.m. At no time was anyone in danger, Via said.

Local bus service was not affected.

The crossing is not far from the site of a collision between an OC Transpo bus and a Via train last September that left six people dead.
