To some it’s the beginning of an end predicted long ago by the Mayans, to others it’s simply some crafty video editing and social media hype.
Regardless, a video that claims to have been shot near the tiny Alberta hamlet of Conklin has garnered more than half a million views in just days on YouTube and has been linked to similar footage popping up around the world. Conklin’s video specifically shows two maintenance workers performing duties in a forest when they are seemingly overcome with an all-encompassing, roar that rises and fades for over a minute.
“It just sent chills up my back,” said Don Moller, owner of Conklin’s general store and resident of more than 25 years, as he watched the video for the first time Tuesday. “It freaked me out, that’s for sure.”
Other residents of the 500-strong hamlet located 150 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray told Metro the video had become a hot topic for conversation at the local school and other hangouts.
Thousands of opinions on its validity have also popped up online. In an eerie twist, the video is very similar to other YouTube videos posted over the past few days that claim to have been shot in areas as far away as Ukraine and New Zealand.
